Why I Created This Recipe

My husband and I were super hungry one afternoon, and I couldn't find a single thing in the fridge to eat. So, I did what I do best: I took out all of the ingredients I had and started to come up with a fun snack.

I had some tortillas, leftover pizza sauce from pizza night, a few slices of turkey pepperoni, plus shredded cheese and string cheese that I always keep in my cheese drawer.

That's when I had the idea to make pizza rolls in the air fryer using these simple ingredients! Within just 10 minutes, we had the most delicious and satisfying snack. My husband wanted even more! Now, these pizza rolls have become a non-negotiable staple in our home.

Why I Like This Recipe

  • Quick and Easy: With just 10 minutes in the air fryer, they're ready to enjoy.

Pizza Rolls Ingredients

  • Tortillas: I use the smaller ones that are about 6″-8″ in size. I love using flour because it seems to roll easier, but you can use any sort of tortilla. If you are gluten-free, go in with a gluten-free tortilla. For lower calories, go in with a corn tortilla. And if you are low-carb, use a low-carb tortilla.

  • Pizza sauce: I always have pizza sauce. Look at the ingredients to make sure you are getting a high-quality one. I love Rao’s.

  • Shredded mozzarella cheese: You can use any shredded cheese you have on hand. I personally think the mozzarella tastes really great.

  • String cheese: Use any mozzarella string cheese. If you wanted to cut the calories, you could cut the string cheese in half and place half of the string cheese in the center. I like it really cheesy, so I go in with the whole thing.

  • Pepperoni: Any kind works. I love using turkey pepperoni. It’s slightly less calories and less fat. I also think it tastes great.

  • Avocado oil spray: You can use any spray you have, like olive oil or butter. The idea is just to coat the bottom of the air fryer and again the top of the roll-ups before adding the garlic powder and oregano seasoning.

Directions

  1. Prep the Tortillas: Lay out the tortillas and spread 1-2 tablespoons of pizza sauce evenly on each one.

  2. Add Cheese and Pepperoni: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce, then line up pepperoni slices down the center of each tortilla.

  3. Insert String Cheese: Place a string cheese stick in the center on top of the pepperoni.

  4. Roll Them Up: Roll each tortilla tightly and place seam-side down in the sprayed air fryer basket.

  5. Air Fry: Cook at 350°F for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they're golden and crispy.

  6. Serve: Let them cool slightly before serving with extra pizza sauce for dipping.

Jazz's Tips for Success!

  • Customize: Experiment with different fillings like olives or pineapple (grab some filling inspo from the section below!).

  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free tortillas for a GF version.

  • Healthier Option: Opt for turkey pepperoni and part-skim mozzarella for a lighter option.

Other Pizza Roll Filling Ideas

  • Jalapeño: Add some heat to your rolls by adding sliced jalapeños to the filling. It's the perfect option for spice lovers.

  • Ham: Take a classic Hawaiian twist by adding diced ham to the filling. The combination of ham and pineapple will create a delicious sweet and savory flavor.

  • Pineapple: Speaking of pineapple, why not add some pineapple chunks to your pizza rolls? The sweetness of the pineapple will balance out the savory flavors.

  • Olives: For olive enthusiasts, try adding sliced black or green olives to the filling. They add a salty and briny flavor that pairs perfectly with the cheese and sauce.

  • Spinach: Sneak in some greens by adding spinach leaves to the filling. It's a great way to add some nutrients to your snack without sacrificing taste.

  • Sun-dried tomatoes: For a burst of tangy and intense flavor, add some chopped sun-dried tomatoes. They add a delicious umami taste to the rolls.

  • Sausage: If you're a fan of sausage pizza, crumble some cooked sausage and add it to the filling. It'll add a hearty and savory element to your rolls.
