Best Way to Tell If a Watermelon is Ripe and Sweet

I’ve always loved biting into a perfectly ripe watermelon on a hot summer day. There's something incredibly refreshing about that first bite of sweet, juicy fruit that makes all the difference.

But finding a good watermelon, especially at the grocery store, can sometimes feel like a daunting task. Over the years, I’ve learned some simple tips to help identify the best watermelon. Here’s everything you need to know to pick the perfect melon!

How Can You Tell if a Watermelon is Ripe?

Check for the Ground Spot

One of the first things I look for is the ground spot on the underside of the watermelon. This is the part that rested on the ground on the middle of the watermelon while the melon was growing. A creamy yellow spot is a good indicator that the watermelon had time to ripen in the sun. If the spot is white or even non-existent, it’s likely an unripe melon.

Inspect the Rind

The outside of the watermelon should be firm and free of any soft spots. A watermelon with soft spots is usually overripe or damaged. Look for irregular bumps and bruises, which can be signs of mishandling. The rind of the melon should be a uniform shape and free of any major imperfections.

What is the Best Way to Determine Sweetness?

Look for Sugar Spots

Sugar spots are those small, dark patches you might see on the rind. These spots are a good sign that the watermelon is a sweet melon, as they indicate sugar is seeping through the skin. They might not be the prettiest, but they often mark the sweetest watermelons.

Tap for a Deep Sound

I always give the watermelon a good tap. A heavy watermelon with a deep sound indicates that it’s full of water and, therefore, should be juicy. You’re looking for a deep sound rather than a dull thud, which might indicate a less juicy fruit. If the sound is flat, the watermelon may be overripe or even hollow inside.

Examine the Stem and Belly

The stem is another clue. A green stem suggests the watermelon is fresh and potentially picked recently. Meanwhile, a dried, shriveled stem can mean the melon has been off the vine for too long.

The underside of the watermelon should have a yellow belly. This yellow belly, or ground spot, indicates that the watermelon ripened in the sun. A pale or white spot, on the other hand, is a sign of an unripe melon.

Simple Tips for Picking the Best Watermelon

Feel the Weight

A good watermelon should feel heavy for its size. This extra weight comes from the high water content, which translates to a juicy watermelon. It’s a simple tip, but it’s a great way to ensure you’re getting a juicy fruit.

Listen for the Hollow Sound

Hold the watermelon close to your ear and give it a tap. If you hear a deep, resonant sound that seems hollow, you’ve likely found a sweet and ripe melon. This type of sound suggests that the fruit is packed with water, a key indicator of a juicy and flavorful watermelon.

Check for Uniform Shape

Look for a watermelon with a uniform shape. Irregular bumps can be a sign of inconsistent growth, which might affect the flavor and texture. A perfectly shaped watermelon is likely to be the juiciest watermelon you can find.

Give it a Good Sniff

I always give the watermelon a good sniff. A sweet aroma from the rind is a promising sign that you’re holding a sweet watermelon. If it doesn’t smell like anything, it might not be ripe yet.

What to Avoid When Picking a Watermelon?

Avoid Soft Spots

Soft spots on a watermelon indicate that it’s overripe or has started to spoil. I avoid watermelons with any mushy areas, as these can be signs of decay. The rind should be firm and uniform.

Don’t be Fooled by the Color Alone

The color of the watermelon’s rind can be misleading. While a dark green rind is often associated with a ripe fruit, it’s not a surefire indicator. Instead, focus on the ground spot and other signs of ripeness.

When is Watermelon Season?

Watermelon season typically runs from May to September. During these months, you’re more likely to find the best watermelons. Outside of this season, the quality of watermelons can vary significantly, so keep an eye on the calendar.

What to Do Next Time You’re at the Grocery Store

Next time you’re in the grocery store, remember these simple tips. Look for a watermelon with a creamy yellow spot, check for sugar spots, and give it a tap to listen for a deep sound. Avoid those with irregular bumps and soft spots, and opt for a heavy watermelon with a sweet aroma.

Picking the perfect watermelon doesn’t have to be a guessing game. With these tips, you’ll be able to find the sweetest watermelon every time. Happy watermelon hunting!
