Air Fryer Avocado Fries

I was at the grocery store browsing through the frozen section when I found frozen avocado fries! I thought, that’s a really neat snack. I took a look at the price tag and the actual ingredients and I thought… both of those I could improve. After some trial and error, the final result was the best air fryer avocado fries!

Why You’ll Love This Air Fryer Avocado Fries Recipe

  • Quick and Easy. These fries are ready in about 20 minutes and require minimal ingredients.

  • Affordable. Buy avocados when they’re on sale and use ingredients already in your pantry.

  • A Unique Snack. It’s fun to munch on avocado fries vs. a bag of potato chips. It’s definitely more of a topic of conversation at a party. Plus, this appetizer is perfect for dipping!

  • Healthy. Avocado fries are made with real, whole ingredients. Avocados are rich in healthy fats. You control the sodium and oil intake. No deep frying or greasy residue. It’s also super easy to make them gluten-free or vegan.

Ingredients

  • Avocados: The firmer, the better! Soft or ripe avocados won’t work well for this recipe, because you need them to actually stay whole when dipping them into the batter. I find that the avocados that are still firm to touch work the best.

  • Gluten-free flour: This could be any flour on hand. Try all purpose flour, gluten free flour, cassava, oat or almond flour!

  • Seasoning: Keep it simple with garlic powder and salt.

  • Egg: Whisk the egg and use it as a binder to helo the panko stick to the avocado slices.

  • Panko breadcrumbs: I love the crunch that panko provides. I wouldn’t recommend using regular breadcrumbs because it certainly won’t be as crunchy. The panko crisps up in the air fryer and it’s absolutely delicious!

How to Make Air Fryer Avocado Fries

Preheat your air fryer to 400F for 4 minutes.

Slice Avocado into “Fries”

Slice the avocados in half, lengthwise then twist to open. Remove the pit carefully with a knife. Scoop out the avocado flesh from the skin with a spoon and place the half side down on a cutting board. Slice the avocado into wedges, if you have a small to medium size avocado, just slice each half into 3 wedges.

Season and Coat the Avocado Fries

Prepare 3 shallow bowls. Add the flour, garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt into one bowl. Then add the whisked egg into another bowl. Finally, add the panko breadcrumbs into the last bowl.

Take each wedge and dip it into the flour mixture first, shaking off any excess. Then into the egg, and the panko. Make sure to press on the panko breadcrumbs on the avocado.

Air Fry Avocado Fries

Place the avocado into a sprayed air fryer. I like to spray mine with avocado oil or line the air fryer with parchment paper. Repeat until all wedges are coated and in a single layer in the air fryer.

Cook for 12 minutes, flipping the avocado fries halfway through. Serve these with your favorite sauce!

Variations + Substitutions

  • Vegan: I tried this recipe with an egg replacement and it worked just fine! If you are vegan, you can use a flax egg or a vegan egg replacement!

  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko breadcrumbs.

  • Baked Avocado Fries: If you don’t have an air fryer, place avocado fries on a baking sheet and set them in a preheated oven set to 400F for 15-20 minutes

  • Spicy: Add cayenne pepper, red chili flakes, chili powder, or cajun seasoning for a kick of spice.

  • Cheese: Sprinkle the breaded avocado fries with parmesan cheese for savory, cheesy flavor.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Avocado Fries

Enjoy them as is or eat them as a replacement for french fries. Here are some tasty ideas:

  • Dips: These fries were made for dipping! Dip them in ranch dressing, aioli, hot sauce, buffalo sauce, or ketchup.

  • Burgers: Swap regular fries for avocado fries to save some calories.

  • Salad: Add air fryer avocado fries to salad, for a tasty, crispy addition.

  • Protein: Serve them as a nutritious side for chicken, fish, or pork as a nutritious side.

Tips

  • If the avocados are prime for making guacamole, they are too soft for avocado fries.

  • If you aren’t using parchment paper, spray the air fryer basket with a nonstick cooking spray in order to prevent the fries from sticking.

  • Ensure the air fryer avocado fries are in a single layer and not too close together. If you overcrowd the basket, the fries won’t crisp up.

Storage

Although crispy avocado fries are best served fresh, they can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat, air fry for 2-3 minutes at 350F.
